Here at Style Tails, International Cat Day gets us as excited as a cat with a ball of wool! History dictates that cats have lived alongside humans in harmony for decades so it’s unsurprising that they’ve made their way onto the big screen, found their place on the pages of literature and have even become a sensation on the internet. So in honour of International Cat Day this month, we take a look at some of the most stylish and memorable cats that have definitely won a place in our hearts.
From the pages of Lewis Carol’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, readers were instantly delighted by the fictitious Cheshire Cat. With the ability to disappear at will, his iconic grin is often the last of his features to vanish. The cat is believed to have been inspired by the much-loved British Shorthair, renowned for its one-of-a-kind face. With stripy pink and purple markings, eventually brought to life on screen by Disney, there’s no denying that the Cheshire Cat is one fashion-forward puss, which has inspired many stylish clothing prints over the years.
Simply known as ‘Cat’, the nameless companion of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (or Orangey to his owners) went on to win an award for his work in the film. According to Audrey herself, recording the scene of abandonment was one of the most unpleasant she had to do, as she had a great love for animals. Just like his owner, the chic ginger tabby definitely had tons of style.
HAMILTON THE HIPSTER CAT
With a permanent ‘tash, this is one cat that definitely doesn’t need to accessorise! Rescue cat Hamilton has attracted much attention, given his perfect moustache and human like facial features, which has led to recognition on various news programmes and media around the world. His hipster status is taken to a whole other level when he wears matching bowties with his owner.
This one definitely needs very little introduction! Created in 1974, the fictional character was produced by the Japanese company, Sanrio. Her fame has risen dramatically over the years, and today, Hello Kitty is the third highest-grossing franchise of all-time. Adorning everything from t-shirts to stationery, while targeted towards children, there’s no denying that the kawaii kitty is loved by many generations.
TARDAR SAUCE AKA GRUMPY CAT
Grumpy Cat first shot to fame in 2012 when a photo was posted online. People questioned whether it had been altered, and so her owners upload videos to Youtube to show her off in all her glory. Her petite stature and famous face is attributed to feline dwarfism and her rear end wobbles when she walks. Despite her notoriously grumpy features, she’s actually a very happy and much-loved cat and definitely earns our accolade for being one of the most stylish cats, as we’re fans of those who sway from tradition.
MARIE FROM THE ARISTOCATS
While Disney’s Aristocats is a must-watch for any cat fan, it’s hopeless romantic Marie who steals the limelight. This sassy white-fur kitten is adorned with pink oversized bows, giving her oodles of style. A purebred Turkish Angora kitten, her long, white fur, bright blue eyes and thick lashes make her undeniably cute!
With Karl Lagerfeld as her owner, there’s no doubt that Choupette is a seriously stylish kitty. The fashion-forward feline has inspired a collection of handbags, and has even appeared in photo shoots. Like her owner, she is portrayed has being fierce and spoiled, presumably a combination of the various stereotypical character traits of individuals in the fashion industry.
The star of book and film sensation, A Street Cat Named Bob, when it comes to style, Bob is one cat who knows how to accessorise. Showcasing an array of scarves, Bob is streets ahead of the rest. Based on a true story, Bob’s unconditional companionship helps turn the life around of a busker and recovering drug-addict, proving that felines really are our friends.
OLIVIA BENSON AND MEREDITH GREY
With Taylor Swift as their owner, it was only a matter of time before the duo of Scottish fold cats rose to fame. When Taylor isn’t hanging out with her #girlsquad or penning songs about being broken hearted, she’s posting photos of the perfect pair on her Instagram feed. Olivia and Meredith have even inspired a line of merchandise.
BUONA (AKA @_PIZZICATO_)
The Insta-famous Japanese cat has a serious sense of style. Like a cute cat in costumes? This is one account you definitely need to follow. Sporting everything from glasses to holiday-inspired outfits, the exotic shorthair cat can pull of pretty much anything!
