There’s only one thing that makes us happier than beautiful design (ok two things, kitten paws are just delightful), and that is beautiful design that is eco conscious and ethical. That is why we are so excited to introduce Dandy Cat, a new designer brand from Belgium, who make modern cat furniture from one of today’s most sustainable materials, bamboo.
Let’s start with how they look; contemporary, minimal but with the warmth and tactility of natural materials, Dandy cat have launched with two beautiful pieces for design-loving pussies – The Dandy Ball, a spherical cat cocoon made of hand spun bamboo, which provides your cat with a safe and protective space to retreat for naps and plenty of lounging. And the Dandy Bed, an asymmetrical bamboo cat basket which can be used on the floor or up on a pedestal, providing a raised sleeping position that cats love. Both items come fitted with a soft foam cushion and washable faux fur cover for your cat to pad and knead.
Dandy Cat founder Anne Joly said of their choice of bamboo: “We were looking for a material that was resistant, light, stylish, eco friendly and durable – bamboo was the natural choice. Bamboo is is not a tree but a plant of the family of reeds, and its cultivation does not require fertilisers or pesticides (it is naturally protected against parasites). It is one of the plants that absorbs the most CO2 and releases a lot of oxygen. Its growth and regrowth are so rapid that its exploitation does not contribute to deforestation. Plus bamboo is totally recyclable. ”
Dandy Cat’s search for the best bamboo artisans led them to Vietnam. Here they visited numerous workshops to find a manufacturer who aligned with their ethics and values. Non-negotiable were: no child labour, a decent salary for workers, respect of working time, and safe working conditions.
“Each item in our collection is handcrafted by Vietnamese artisans. In Vietnam, crafts are organised into village-related corporations, which participate in the development of the rural economy. Women make up the vast majority of these artisans and their work provides families with a decent standard of living. The manufacture and export of bamboo objects has enabled many villages to emerge from poverty,” explains Anne.
Dandy Cat is now available in the StyleTails Shop, the Dandy Ball retails for £169 and the Dandy Bed for £179. More products from this new brand are coming soon. Tell us what you think of the collection in the comments below?
