Cute little critters like rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are growing in popularity as the perfect pet for busy city folk. Apart from being adorable, they are also reasonably low maintenance and require a lot less space that dogs and cats. However, there has always been one problem with keeping these furry friends indoors – options for modern enclosures have been dismally slim.
Enter LekPets – launched by product designer and guinea pig owner Laura Smith. LekPets create stylish, indoor cages for rabbits, guinea pigs and other rodents, which fit seamlessly into the modern living space. Designed to be bought in blocks, you can build and expand them how you like. Each unit is made from spruce plywood, giving them an unmistakably Scandinavian feel, and they can be customised with short and long legs, wheels, different colour doors and ramps.
The idea for the range came about when Laura got her own guinea pigs.”I didn’t like the look of existing guinea pig homes – I wanted an indoor cage that was modern. I also found there was a gap in the market for modular expandable pet homes; there was no way of extending your pet home without a bit of DIY work which some owners don’t want to do, so pets are either in homes too small for them or they would need to buy a brand new larger home.”
Lekpets’ designer rabbit and rodent hutches start at £130 for a single block, up to £600 for 6 blocks. Laura can also create custom designs. Check out the full range at lekpets.com.
