We met London based photographer Ursula Roxy Aitchison in 2014 to talk about her project You and Your Dog – a book capturing the connection and affection between people and their dogs in aid of charity, The Cinnamon Trust. Unable to take on the floods of requests from people to be photographed for the book with their canine companions, the talented photographer has now launched portrait business, Phodography.
“Phodography is the ultimate family portrait for those that take their pets seriously. We believe they are part of the family and not only deserve a place at the table with us (or at least under it), but also a place on the wall in a frame alongside us,” says Aitchison.
Her signature visual style is natural, playful and contemporary – capturing those perfect moments of understanding between dog and owner. “Phodography is about making each photoshoot completely unique and true to the person and the dog, not another faceless dog on a white backdrop. Learning about the dog and owner is an important part of prepping for a photoshoot, just as much as choosing the right locations that the dog is comfortable with, and that best represent the life that the dog and owner lead together.”
Currently, Phodography offer pooch portrait services in the UK and Europe, but Ursula’s dream is to take the venture world wide. “I want to be able to offer these photographs to treasure for life to everyone and every dog.”
