Alqo Wasi dog sweaters are ultimate in artisan apparel for fashion-forward hounds this winter. “Our intention has been always to highlight Andean weaves and textiles, and blend them with modern styles,” says founder Patricia Queirolo. “Our country is known for its lively colours and culture so I find inspiration everywhere and in little things – sometimes from an ancient textile, a painting, a song, street craftsmanship, or playing with coloured yarns.”

Alqo Wasi means ‘Dog Home’ in Quecha, the language of the Incas – and not only do these gorgeous sweaters look great and keep a pooch warm in this winter weather, they also have a beautiful ethical story behind them too.

On the hunt for something truly stylish for her own Westies, Paco and Lua, the idea for Alqo Wasi came to Patricia on a family trip through the Peruvian Andes. Watching Alpacas graze freely across the land and inspired by the local craftspeople, the idea for the label was born.

“From time to time we stopped in little villages were native communities are known for their incredible weaving and natural dying techniques” she explains. “After some time, I decided to take the risk and created a brand that could give dogs a sophisticated, one-of-a-kind piece of work, and at the same time help a great cause.”

Patricia began working with women in local Peruvian communities to bring her designs to life. “It is important for me in the sense that we are not only building a brand but building a family. Creating good jobs in different regions of Peru and being environmentally responsible with natural fibres such as alpaca and cotton helps reduce poverty and generates sustainable development for a third world country such as ours,” she says.
