PET-FRIENDLY REVIEW: Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa, Wiltshire

We all love an adventure of the canine kind, and earlier this year we teamed up with luxury doggie travel experts Chien Bleu to give one lucky person and their pooch the chance to win a night away in the lapdog of luxury at the beautiful Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa in Wiltshire .

Our winner Jenny Shaw, along with her husband and their French Bulldog Staffy cross, Boo report back on their weekend of play, paddling and pampering…..ENVY ALERT!

Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa in Wiltshire - Dog-Friendly

“We arrived at Bishopstrow House on a sunny Friday afternoon, on one of the hottest days of the year and couldn’t wait to get out of the car and explore. The grounds were shady and relaxing and gave Boo his first chance to investigate – plenty of new things to smell and space to run around – perfect!

The hotel itself was absolutely stunning, an old Georgian house with a modern extension for the restaurant with lots of glass to let the light in. The hotel staff were possibly the friendliest we have ever come across, welcoming from the outset and with lots of special treatment for Boo.

We were shown up to our room on the first floor which was beautifully decorated with a separate hallway (perfect for Boo’s bed!), a huge bathroom with a roll top bath and walk in shower – gorgeous.

Hungry from the car, we made our way down to the outdoor terrace for afternoon tea and a drink for Boo. The food was delicious but quickly overshadowed by the four legged celebrity we had in tow who took pride of place in a shady spot by our table to receive his many well wishers – when they call this hotel dog friendly it’s not just the staff, it seemed every hotel guest was a dog lover!

Naturally Boo lapped up the attention and was delighted to hang out with a Lurcher cross and Maltese cross who were both also staying at the hotel and hoping to share in some tasty afternoon tea.

While chilling out in the sun on the terrace we made our greatest discovery – an outdoor swimming pool! Possibly the best thing ever in a heat wave, the pool was set behind a wall to keep the breeze out, with plenty of sun loungers and happy looking guests.

Tea time over and ready for a walk! The hotel has one or two hour walks with directions for guests, but being such a hot day and so full of tea, cake and champagne, we opted to just explore the immediate grounds instead. A short stroll down the drive found us in a secret garden filled with lavender, butterflies and old statues. Boo loved running around off his lead exploring while we checked out the garden. It felt a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Making our way along the stream, we ended up by the outdoor tennis court much to Mr Shaw’s delight, who quickly booked us in to play before dinner. Not wanting to miss out on any exercise, Boo found a big empty meadow for us to throw his frisbee and balls in – he has to play with two balls at a time since teaching himself to play football as a puppy, but he can only do it while carrying one in his mouth!

Time for tennis and for Boo to have a nap, so we left him tucked up in bed in the huge hallway and headed down to the courts. An hour later and in the evening heat, it was time to cool down and jump in the pool! Mr Shaw opted for a workout in the air-conditioned gym, meaning I had the pool all to myself as the sun had gone in and so had all the other guests.

Swimming alone in a pool in England in a heat wave, surrounded by flowers and statues was absolute bliss. I could have stayed in there forever if we didn’t have a table booked at the hotel’s Mulberry restaurant where we opted for four courses of soup, a trio of Pork, lemon sable and the cheese and biscuits to share – delicious.

After a great night’s sleep we were looking forward to our spa treatments at the Haclyon spa. Mr Shaw had a deep tissue massage while I went for the ‘Executive Timeout’ a massage and facial combo. 90 minutes later, and not certain I didn’t fall asleep a little bit, I felt refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to get back to reality.

We said our goodbyes to the fantastic staff and Boo’s many new friends and hit the road. A huge thank you to all the staff at Bishopstrow for a wonderful weekend.”
