Well, last week certainly took an unusual turn. It’s not every Wednesday that you find yourself judging a charity dog show with comedy royalty and long-time dog lover Ronnie Corbett. Last Wednesday however was one of those days!
George and I were lucky enough to be asked to judge the many hopeful hounds at the annual Hyde Park Vet Dog Show in aid of this year’s very worthy cause, HSAM – Help the street animals of Morocco. I was shocked and horrified to discover that the problem of street animals in Morocco is dealt with by poisoning them, which is utterly horrible and completely ineffective. HSAM works with the local communities in Morocco to improve the lives of street animals by providing essential medical treatment and campaigning for better living conditions including the introduction of a neutering programme. The great news is, Wednesday’s event has now raised over £2,500 for the cause!
Ready for a hot afternoon of stiff competition, we headed over the lovely, leafy Connaught Street, where we were slightly shocked to discover Ronnie himself. As it turns out, Ronnie is a long time dog lover and owner, and has recently rescued a two year old Schnauzer Collie cross called Basil. As a major doggy dude, Ronnie is currently filming a program for the BBC all about animals and us lucky schmucks got to be part of it!
We took our places on the panel, poised ready to judge the primped pooches in some interesting categories including – the dog that most looks like its owner, the puppy with the most personality and the most distinguished old timer.
Now I nearly had a bone to pick with Mr Corbett after his last minute addition to the panel meant that I was bumped from the presenting the winner of dog that most looks like its owner, and instead handed the award to the runner up. I thought better of it though and was pretty pleased with our choice for runner up – a dead ringer!
